Archbishop of Canterbury presents award to St Leonard’s

A large congregation in Blackburn Cathedral loudly applauded St Leonard’s Church as they received their ‘Child Friendly Church Award’ from Dr Rowan Williams on 7th November. The Award is only presented to parishes that provide a safe and welcoming environment for children and show a real commitment to nurturing young people in the Christian faith.

Child Friendly Church Award
St Leonard’s is the 50th church in Blackburn Diocese to achieve the Award and it so happened that Archbishop Williams was visiting the Diocese at just the right time to present the plaque and certificate to about 25 members of the congregation. It was a great honour and a memorable occasion for them - especially for the children who were present.

Activities for children at St Leonard’s include Sunday School during the 9:45am Sunday services each week. In addition ‘Rock Solid’ the youth group for school years 6,7,8 & 9 meets fortnightly on Sunday evenings at 6:30pm. The church choir welcomes junior members (practices on Wednesday evenings at 6:15pm).

There are Mums and Toddlers sessions on Mondays (1:30-3pm) and Thursdays (9:30-11am). On the First Friday of each month at 6pm there is a short informal service aimed at families with young children. Brownies and Rainbows meet on Thursday evenings. There’s a friendly welcome for you at all these activities.
